Our Grapes

Great winemakers, like great chefs, know that outstanding results only come from the finest ingredients. Some of California’s finest winemakers have years of experience with our vineyard. They know that our site will make a wine like no other. They know the fruit will not be overcropped, sunburned or moldy. The berries will be small, the fruit clean and cold on delivery. Grown in perfectly balanced soils in a vineyard with 2,100 vines per acre, producing only about two to two-and-a-half pounds per vine.

With a vineyard crew of 27, along with three viticulturalists, Alder Springs stands with a unique few in its attention to detail. The ranch supplies housing to all its employees so the crew is the same, year after year. They know the place and practices and therefore do meticulous work. The crew is paid by the hour rather than by the piece, encouraging quality over quantity.

Every vine is tended 13 times (not counting composting, mowing, spraying, hedging and netting). Every vine is fully netted at verasion – nearly 140 miles of netting applied and removed each season – to prevent bird damage.

The high altitude, warm days, and cool nights create grapes with a good acid balance and thick dark skins. The water management system promotes a high skin to juice ratio that rewards with dark and complex wines.
